Passion Week- Friday Encouragement “It Is Finished”

“So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” John 19:30

“It is finished” come from one Greek word “Tetelestai.” The word is unfamiliar to us, but it was used in everyday life back then.

A servant would use it when reporting to his or her master, “I have completed the work assigned to me” (John 17:4).

When a priest examined an animal sacrifice and found it faultless, this word would apply.

The word means, “It is finished, it stands finished, and it always will be finished!”

When Jesus cried out, “It is finished,” He referenced a familiar expression that often comes up in daily market transactions. Every bill of sale included the phrase “paid in full,” signaling that the person holding the document was now the proud owner of their newly acquired item.

The Lamb of God was sacrificed to take away the sin of the world, and it is done. “It is finished!”

“The entire work of redemption has been brought to completion.” These words specify not the end of Jesus’ life, but the completion of His task.
