Worship for an Autonomous Age

Worship for an Autonomous Age

Today, “worship” means something different to each person.

What is a good definition of worship? The apostle Paul did a pretty good job in defining worship as action… (Romans 12:1-2)

Worship is a holy spiritual sacrifice involving our whole person. True worship goes beyond a feel-good experience.

The very foundation of the “seeker services” is that worship is entertainment directed toward an audience, and an audience that is unchurched.

They often come asking, “What’s in it for me? How will this worship service make me feel? Will it help me meet my goals in life? Does it have anything relevant to say?

Self-reliance, self-preservation, self-confidence, self-esteem, self-help, self-improvement, all of these revolve around identity.

Your identity is a reflection of an image that is worth something.

The image and worth you reflect are tightly knit together. Worship is the expression of the worth of something, expressing how much something/someone means to you!

“Love does not look at itself, it is absorbed in the object of its love.” (Martyn Lloyd-Jones)
